Serial Shoplifter Found Guilty Of Felony Theft

TOPEKA, KANSAS – A Shawnee County jury this morning returned a guilty verdict against Archie Lee Marks, 51, Topeka, Kansas for felony theft – two or more prior convictions, a severity-level 9 nonperson felony. It was alleged that Mr. Marks had stolen less than $1,000 of property from Westlake ACE Hardware of Topeka. Mr. Marks had also previously been convicted of theft in 2001, 2006, and twice in 2007. All four convictions were from cases filed and prosecuted by the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office.

“Today’s prosecution and conviction of Mr. Marks reflects the Shawnee County District Attorney Office’s renewed commitment to identifying, prosecuting and incarcerating the career criminals and repeat offenders who make up the majority of defendant’s we prosecute,” District Attorney Chad Taylor said. “Keeping career criminals incarcerated and off our streets is a priority for my office and a necessity in our efforts to lower crime rates and protect local businesses and citizens.”

Mr. Marks sentencing hearing will be held in the Third Judicial District on October 13, 2009 at 3:00 pm in Division Five. Assistant District Attorney Christopher Scott is the prosecuting attorney.
