Daniel Roman Munoz Conviction

Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced today the conviction of Daniel Roman Munoz in relation to a 2018 homicide and attempted homicide in Topeka. On June 9, 2018, law enforcement was called to 429 SE Lafayette in response to a shooting. Officers arrived and located two individuals, Pierce Ragsdale and Ramon Ali Matthews, suffering from gunshot wounds. The subsequent investigation resulted in the arrest and charging of Munoz. On June 15, 2018, law enforcement was notified that Ramon Matthews had died as the result of the gunshot injuries. Today, at the conclusion of a 4-day jury trial, a Shawnee County jury returned a verdict of Guilty on four individual counts: Murder in the Second Degree, Intentional (Level 1 Felony); Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Intentional (Level 3 Felony); Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon (Level 8 Felony); and Theft (Class A misdemeanor). The case will now be scheduled for a sentencing hearing at a future setting. For the top charge, Munoz will face a presumptive prison sentence of between 147 and 653 months, depending on his criminal history.

Kagay commended the work of Deputy District Attorney Dustin Curry, Assistant District Attorney Bethany Lee, as well as the remainder of the trial support staff for their work in prosecuting the case. Kagay also commended the work of the Topeka Police Department who handled the investigation.
