Department of Corrections: Programs: Medical Services

In order to ensure inmates and juvenile residents receive the best in correctional medical care, the Shawnee County Department of Corrections contracts with Prison Health Services, Inc. (PHS) for providing comprehensive medical services. PHS is nationally recognized as a leading provider of quality healthcare services in correctional facilities. PHS assists the department in meeting a rigorous set of healthcare standards and achieving accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.
In coordination with PHS, the facility provides a range of medical services to meet the medical needs of inmates/residents. Twenty-four-hour-a-day medical services are provided at the facility. An initial health screening is conducted on all inmates/residents at the time of booking. A process is in place to respond to daily medical needs, medication dispensing and other medical needs as identified. There is a medical module available for housing inmates classified with needs for such placement.

The medical status of each inmate/resident is considered confidential. Due to the application of federal laws respecting the confidentiality of medical records, release of medical condition information to any outside source requires a Release of Information signed by the inmate.
