Mental Health Services

The Shawnee County Department of Corrections recognizes the importance of supporting sound mental health. Mental health resources will be available through departmental mental health staff and community resources to all inmates/residents when they encounter problems.

Suicide is the leading cause of death in adult jails. All staff and inmates/residents have a responsibility to prevent suicide. If an inmate/resident is depressed and/or feels like harming him or herself, we encourage inmates/residents to report these feelings to staff so that appropriate actions can be taken to make the inmate/resident feel better. What may seem impossible today will be different later, once an inmate/resident has had a chance to think more clearly and talk to a mental health professional.

We also encourage inmates/residents, family members, and friends who may have knowledge that another inmate/resident is experiencing severe emotional difficulties that may cause him/her to attempt to commit suicide, to report this situation immediately to the closest staff person. Staff has to be aware that an inmate/resident is thinking about suicide before they can help the inmate/resident.
