Purpose
Our Vision: Leading the way to a healthier Shawnee County
Our Mission: Dedicated to promoting and protecting health in the community by providing prevention, education, and health care services
Our Aim: The Shawnee County Health Agency’s mission will be attained through provision of high-quality services and partnerships designed to improve the health of the community
History
Public health efforts began in Topeka in 1866 with the appointment of the city’s first Public Health Officer. By contrast, the police department was not established until 1869 and the fire department until 1870 demonstrating the early and strong emphasis this community has always placed on public health. It is a fundamental service whose purpose is to protect and promote the health of all citizens. The client of the Health Agency is the entire community.
