The Planning Department consists of two individuals performing varying functions. Each person and their contact information follows:

Interim Planning Director

Principal Duties: Responsible for the development and administration of the planning department and its function; provide for staff training and development and personnel administration; serve as secretary to the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals; coordinate with other organizations, agencies and government entities to establish guidelines for the evaluation of land use proposals and the development of land use policies; and set the planning department budget in consultation with the Planning Commission. Coordinates the review and evaluation of building projects for compliance with zoning, subdivision, floodplain and other adopted codes and regulations. Investigates alleged zoning violations and enforces measures to obtain compliance. Consults with the public to interpret, analyze or explain applicable regulatory provisions and assists with other planning functions.

Administrative Assistant

Principal Duties: Responsible for providing administrative support to the department including: intake and processing of land use applications (e.g. rezoning, conditional use permit, etc.); maintenance of processing schedules and verification of compliance with all legal notification requirements; prepares and enters data from source documents, rough draft, copy or general instructions and creates forms, statistical reports and correspondence; assists public with questions about the department and refers phone calls to appropriate individuals for response; maintains filing and accounting system; prepares departmental payroll; and, ordering and maintaining adequate levels of office supplies.


The Shawnee County Planning Department is located at the Shawnee County North Annex, 1515 NW Saline Street, in the Topeka Industrial and Business Park. For easy access, take US 75 Highway and exit at NW Lower Silver Lake Road and go east for approximately three-quarters of a mile, turn south on NW Saline Street and go one block to the Shawnee County Annex.
