The Shawnee County Solid Waste Department (SCSWD) is pleased to welcome you to our new curbside recycling program. The SCSWD and the Board of County Commissioners have been working for several years to bring this new service to our customers. Although you have received your new recycling cart now, our curbside service is currently scheduled to start mid-late January of 2013.
Many of you have been recycling for several years and have utilized our drop-off sites. We do appreciate your commitment and loyalty; however, we have outgrown that program and feel the time has come to implement this community-wide recycling initiative. In offering curbside recycling, Shawnee County has partnered with Waste Management, who has committed to construct a new material recovery facility that will be able to sort and bale recyclables for SCSWD, as well as many other local entities. In addition to the new jobs that will be created at this facility, Shawnee County will be taking a proactive approach to extending the useful life of the current landfill which will, in turn, help keep the cost of all solid waste services as low as possible in the future.
We ask that each of you give curbside recycling a try. If, in the future, you feel recycling is not something you wish to continue, you can always call and request to have your recycling cart removed.
